What’s a more effective way to learn as a beginner? To type out the words, or to use text-to-speech in the target language? What’s your experience/opinion?

I’m currently using software to learn Japanese, but I was curious what is viewed as a more effective method to retention and learning.

  1. My anecdotal experience:

    * Hearing the word is important. Native audio is better than TTS, but TTS is better than only reading.
    * Repeating a word aloud myself (after the native audio) helps enormously with getting it to stick.
