Foreigners living in Japan traveling outside of Japan questions.

1. International driving permit. Can foreigners get one in Japan to drive in other countries?

2. Exchanging money. Does anyone know if it’s a better deal to do in Japan or in the foreign country?

3. Is a negative PCR test still needed even if you have all 4 shots?

4. Can someone recommend a good travel insurance. Will be headed to Indonesia and Singapore.

  1. For the first three questions —

    1. If you have a Japanese driver’s license, you can get a Japanese IDP, regardless of your nationality.
    2. The best option is usually to use your ATM/debit card to receive local currency. You’ll most likely get a better exchange rate than you would from a currency exchange service, which will more than offset the small ATM fee.
    3. If you have at least 3 doses (original 2 plus a booster), you no longer need a PCR test before your flight.

  2. 2. Use credit or pre-paid cards

    3. not required if fully vaccinated, but get a vaccine certificate at ward office before traveling will be useful during re-entry. Also download mysos app, you’ll need it when returning.

    4. (i usually use which ever option that is available during ticket booking or check-in )

  3. 3) Not for entering Japan. For your destination, we don’t know.

    4) Most people recommend Tokio Marine, I think. I normally just use whatever is included in my credit card.
