Bed frame and mattress disposal

Has anyone tried disposing of their beds? I have been thinking of buying a bigger bed but I don’t know what to do with my current bed now. I have been thinking of giving it to my parents but they live in Tokyo and I live in the countryside of Chiba. My bed is in good condition so selling it might also be an option. The only problem when it comes to selling is I don’t have a car or license so delivery is difficult.

  1. If you want to chuck it, then oversized garbage disposal. Varies depending on your city. Search for 粗大ごみ.

Usually the process is: Book a pick up time and date, pay for a sticker at the conbini, put it outside your house with the sticker on at that time and date.

  2. In my first city we had to call for it

In my second city we had to drive to it

Now I drop it off on big garbage day

  3. Try and sell it (put it on jimoty). You might not get much for your mattress (I mean who wants a used mattress unless it’s a really good brand for a low price) but possibly an OK price for the frame.

Tip for jimoty is to make clear that you’re in no rush to sell otherwise people will be more likely to try and knock you on the price (they’ll probably do it anyway but a lot of the recycle shop folks are pretty aggressive (like sharks smelling blood) when they see someone saying they are getting rid of something because they’re moving house.

If you cannot find any takers then just get rid of it via 粗大ゴミ. It’ll probably cost a few thousand yen (like maybe 2-3k?) max so either way not a big deal.

  4. We recently bought a new bed from Nitori and they took the old one when they delivered the new one.
