Campervan or car rental?

Hello Reddit Fam!!

It’ll be my first time in Hokkaido in Jun 2023 (dates planned in Hokkaido: 3-10/11 June; after which, to go to Tokyo (4N), Kyoto (4-5N) and Osaka (3-4N) before heading back to Singapore on 23rd (KIX-SIN).

I’m planning to stay in Sapporo for 3-6 June (3N) and then either pick up a campervan or rent a car to go visit Lake Toya, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa.

6th June: drive to Lake Shibetsu, Lake Toya, maybe drop by noboribetsu

7th June: drive to Furano (4-5hr drive), stop over along the way for food. Maybe visit the Farm Tomito. If we rent a campervan, am planning to visit Hoshioka camp site.

8 June: Furano/ Biei

9 June: Asahikawa – zoo / ramen street

10 June: drive back to Chitose to return car

I’m thinking:
1) as a first timer to Hokkaido, should I try campervan-ing? Or should I familiarise myself with Hokkaido first before I try campervan-ing?

2) cost wise and comfort wise, should I top up just a bit to rent a car + book accoms? I haven’t campervan-ed before and am quite worried about shower facilities and etc. there are some campsites I’d like to visit (Hoshioka, near Furano) but I also note that some of them have little huts for rental for a nights’ stay, which I might want to consider!

3) do you guys think my itinerary is do-able & what else would you suggest?

Thank you in advance ☺️💖

  1. Considering this is not a peak travel period for Hokkaido – you would be probably better off with booking accommodation.

As for your plans: I think your plan would work much better with an additional day – I’m not sure that despite the long June day, you will get to see much beyond Lake Shibetsu and Toyako area on the first day, and the drive to Furano will be either very boring or a slog depending on whether you choose highway or not. Note that the routes from Chitose to Furano area are fairly notorious for being foggy and low-visibility in June.

Generally, I would recommend two days on car trip for Furano/Biei area, but if you are not willing to explore the edges of Daisetsuzan – this is fairly workable.
