Becoming unemployed

I intend on quitting my job by the end of this year but I sadly have not yet secured another job after I quit. My reasons for quitting are the low pay, long commute time and the job content being outside of my field. Would spending say many months unemployed affect my employability moving forward in Japan? My father says I should stick with my current job until I find another but siblings say I should quit cause I am wasting my time there. Both arguments have their merits so it’s a hard choice.

  1. If its me, I never quit a job unless I already have signed the offer on another one. You do lose a lot of bargaining power too, when they know you have no other option than to join them. Also you don’t know how long it will take before you find a job. It’s also more stressful, everyone in my company was let go during corona, I found a job pretty quick (around a month of searching), but I was stressed the whole time.

In Japan, having long gaps (6+ months) will effect you negatively. But a few months I think no. If you’re super miserable, and you can’t find time to search while working, quitting now may help. But you may want to try having a tough month of looking while working. Also changing the health insurance from your current employer is kind of pain. And going to hello work etc. Then again this is Just all my opinion and how I handle things.

  2. Professional recruiter here with 12 years experience recruiting in Japan.

Do not quit your job until you have signed an offer letter for your new role.

As a recruiter if you were unemployed and looking for new work, I wouldn’t even look at your resume.

Interview for new roles while you’re currently working as you will have a salary to negotiate with to the new company.

If you are unemployed you will most likely be offered the same salary you are on now or possibly less.

  3. It sucks but I agree with the others. Don’t quit yet. Unemployment can be even more stressful. You’re not wasting your time if you’re still being paid. Hope you can get a better job soon.
