Sound difference on extended O vs OU

I was wondering is there a difference in the sound that an elongated vowel O sound makes vs OU. For example the words ヨーク vs The sound ヨウク would make(I’m not sure if it’s a real word just using it as an example). Now that I think about it too I’ve seen double vowels like おお being used outside of some wikipedia articles on Shinto deities

  1. The only difference is how long you speak the vowel, but there isn’t a difference between おお and おう sound, for example. I’m not sure the exact reason for why some words are spelled with おお vs. おう though.
