CRBA/Passport Appointment at US Embassy for Multiple Children At Once

Does anyone have any experience with making CRBA and Passport appointments at the US Embassy in Tokyo for multiple kids at once?

I need to register the births of my three children with the US Embassy and apply for their passports. Sounds like it is easy enough to do with a single child, and both parents are supposed to attend the interview at the embassy. I am just more curious about the logistics at the embassy itself. Is setting up the appointments for all three kids at in succession on the same day doable, or will it be a logistical nightmare?

  1. You just need 1 appointment for all 3 kids. There’s a field to fill in the names of everyone coming to the appointment when you make a reservation online. Fill in all your kids’ and your spouse’s names. The names will be printed out in a notebook that the Japanese security team stationed outside the embassy uses to confirm appointments the day of before you go through security.

*edit I just checked the embassy website and it looks like this is old information, it has been over 10 years. The field for everyone’s name is no longer there, perhaps it comes in later in the process after filling out the name of the kid and proceeding to actually book the appointment. Still might be possible to do all 3 with 1 appointment, but to be safe I would either call to confirm or just book 3 appointments to save yourself the headache of having to go back another day. Embassy staff once inside are nice, the hired Japanese security staff outside are pretty uptight.

  2. I’ve only done this with two kids, but I did make them each an appointment. It was just me, as you can get a notarized letter with the other parents “okay” and signature on it. Even with the CRBA, it’s still only about 5-10 minutes per kid at the window. There is usually a little break while they process paperwork and you pay for it.

Don’t forget to bring non-electronic toys and things for the kids. Most of those (phones, DS, Switch, etc.) aren’t allowed and will be checked at security. Good luck OP!

  3. I did it with my 2 kids recently in the Osaka embassy so you can probably do it. Just make sure you have their paper works done.
