Hi there,
Two of us in our early 20s have planned a 2 week trip to Japan in April 2023. We want to see modern Japan with a mix of rural Japan in between, and hence we have planned to spend 3 nights (2.5 full days) in Takayama. We will, unfortunately, just be missing the Sanno Matsuri festival.
Our Takayama plan includes:
* Miyagawa morning markets
* Sanmachi-Suji District, Takayama Jinya
* Hire cycles and take time to explore Takayama
* Higashiyama walk
* Hida Furukawa
* Sake tasting, Hida Beef
* Half day trip to Shirakawago
We are wondering if this seems like an appropriate amount of time to spend in Takayama? We think Takayama looks beautiful, and do not want to feel rushed, but also wonder if we are we spending one too many nights here as this is our first trip to Japan, and maybe should we be staying longer in Kyoto (4 nights there currently)?
Thank you for any advice or opinions!

I went to the Showa era museum and that was really cool. It’s close to part of Sanmachi Suji street. The Hikaru museum is cool looking. Some good exhibits too. Plenty of English.
If your just missing the spring festival there is a good chance the cherry blossoms will still be in bloom, they bloom later in Takayama, and the river becomes a big attraction as they line the banks.
We did three nights and took it easy not rushing about and felt it was a good decision but we did an extra return bus journey to Shinhotaka Ropeway which was very scenic and enjoyable. No snow where I live so you may not be as impressed.
I think you have it all covered as far as what to do. We did spend more time in old town than we thought we would. Kyoto is a lot bigger and more options so I can see it being a tough call.
