ArcGIS / Cartographer jobs for english speakers

I graduated with a BSc in Geography and currently working as a GIS Tech (basically a mapping software) and have been interested in moving to Japan for a while. I know the main way into Japan is through English teaching but I’m wondering if I could get hired as a skilled worker through experience with GIS.

I did some quick searches on google and linkedin but the GIS jobs in Japan seem to be few and far between, like 5 GIS jobs posted over the past couple months, are there more jobs I’m just not seeing or is GIS really not that common in Japan?

I do also work with CAD so maybe their could be some overlap into an engineering job? though idk how important an N2 / N1 would be for that.

  1. Do you have any tech dev/mgmt experience? Look into satellite imaging startups, there are quite a few in Japan.

  2. Finding niche jobs like this that are not your typical IT positions can be difficult. Try reaching out to some of the larger recruitment companies and see if they can hook you up (like Robert Walters etc.) you need to be careful about their offers sometimes (salary etc. might not always be really good) but it will be better than what you get when teaching english.

They will also be able to tell you how important Japanese is. Often they say N2 or N1 but just want to make sure you can communicate with your team.

If you are not on a strict timeline, send them your profile/cv and they will come back to you. It might also be worthwhile to get in direct contact with some of them on linkedin etc.
