I passed N1 a while back and while I wouldn’t call myself fluent by any means, I can definitely read well. That being said I’d like to read about Japanese history in Japanese, and I’d specifically like it if the book itself is of historic value, sort of like if I learned Greek history by reading Herodotus or Roman history by reading Gibbon. Any suggestions?

平家物語 is a classic.
