Trying to move from LA to Japan

Recently we visited Japan for the first time. I can only read and write somewhat in Japanese (I do plan on reaching a level of business fluency in the next few years) but it worked out very well in navigating Tokyo. The quality of life for my income is much better there and the language barrier is less intimidating now.

We work remote and collectively make around 20M yen after American taxes. What would be our best route to continue to work remote and permanently live in Japan?

  1. Either you work for a Japanese company long enough or (and I’m assuming by we this isn’t an option) marry a Japanese national. You can also create a business in Japan, but that requires a hefty investment as well. Something like an established place to do business and a 5 mil yen investment.

There isn’t an option to immigrate to Japan and work remotely right off the bat.

  2. There’s really no visa for what you want to do, so you’ll have to look at the possibility of getting hired locally.

For a moonshot you can see if your company has a branch in Japan you could move to officially speaking or if you’re really well liked if they could get one of their associates to be your employer on paper, but this is definitely something that is extremely limited in how possible it is by your specific situation, and if you are private people like you say I’m guessing you may not have the network.

If you just want to get away and be in a different environment and culture there’s some other options in Asia. A few things in SEA and Taiwan has a Gold Card system you can look into, which could allow you to do what you want and keep your job as of now. In fact it could frankly be a good first step to getting to Japan if you like – someone who has lived and thrived in Asia for a while is *potentially* a much more attractive candidate than someone who might decide they actually don’t like living away from the US, etc.
