Looking for moving/shipping advice

I’m moving from California (Bay Area) to Tokyo in a couple months, and am researching my options for shipping my stuff over to Japan. I’ve reached out to a few international moving companies (e.g. united van lines, international van lines, etc.), but they all rejected me because they don’t do small-scale moving. For context, I’m only moving a 1 bedroom apartment, and I’m only shipping medium/larges U-haul boxes of clothes and personal stuff. No furniture whatsoever.

My company’s relocation team suggested I simply ship the boxes using DHL/Fedex. I looked it up and should cost around $200 per 50lbs box, and I’m shipping about 20 boxes, so that’d be $4000, and it should arrive within a week or so. But Most of the things I wouldn’t need for a couple months, so I’m trying to find more cost effective ways to ship them (e.g. freight ships).

Anyone recently moved from Bay Area and can recommend companies/options for this?
Thanks a lot for any advice.
