English speaking Thyroid specialist suggestion

Hey r/japanlife,

Hope you guys are doing great. Need some quick suggestions. My wife is suffering from hypothyroidism. She has to check her THS every 3 months. She was doing great back home before moving to Japan with her current medications. But for past few days, she is getting fatigued a lot. So, I need to get her THS tested asap. I guess I can just visit any doctor and ask him to issue a prescription to do the testing or refer to somewhere. But it would be great if you guys could recommend some good doctors/clinics near Yokohama/ Tokyo (Shinagawa /Shibuya/ Shinjuku/ Chiyoda) specializing in thyroid treatments.

Thanks in advance.

  1. If you can’t find a specialist who speaks English, you could go to a normal specialist an bring along someone who can act as an interpreter. I know this seems obvious but surprisingly a lot of people either forget or do not realize this is an option. Good luck.

  2. I am currently seeing Dr. Hiroko Izumo after a few years going to Ito. I wanted more personalized attention since I was feeling several symptoms and my blood work was fine. It worked out great for me since I got more comprehensive treatment and attention. She speaks English.

Ito is fine for maintenance, going in, getting your blood test/ultrasound and medication. It will take about 2 hours to get through it all. If you have more specific concerns I would go to a doctor. If not, Ito is more than ok!

  3. In one of the hospitals I visited, they have in-house translators. I also had experiences that they call a number for remote support of a professional translator. You can ask infor desk if they offer that service.

Thyroid issues can be impacted during seasonal changes. The test result might take one-two work days per personal experience in a community hospital.

    Good luck!
