JR pass check and sleeper train reservations

We’d like to book 2 single cabins in the sunrise seto/izumo train from okayama->tokyo using a JR pass, and paying the supplement fee.

I’m arriving in Japan a month earlier but my friend is only arriving a week before. Since we’re travelling on 12/29 around new year’s, I’m concerned she won’t get seats if she books late.

I was planning to reserve seats for both of us a month in advance, but do we have to pay full price when reserving if I don’t have her JR pass? And it’s not possible for me to pick her JR pass up in advance without her passport right?

What if we buy her pass from the official website which allows advance seat reservations (but does it let us upgrade rooms)? Or reserve one of the twin rooms, does that only require 1 jr pass (mine) to get 2 tickets?

Wondering best way to be able to reserve seats. Thanks for any help!

  1. You can book single cabins in advance via JR West’s website. You can avoid paying base fare via selecting appropriate option on the website.

The tickets will still need to be picked up in appropriate ticket machines or designated offices of JR West. With an in-person pick up, you need to have your JR Pass already picked up.

Note that since JR Pass covers only *nobi nobi* seats in Sunset Izumo/Seto, you have to pay both for limited express surcharge and the single cabin surcharge.
