  1. For teachers collecting homework electronically, where do you set deadlines? My practice has been to ask students in, for example, a class that meets once per week on Friday to turn in routine homework by midnight of the Wednesday before the next class meeting, which gives me time to review the work and check for things that should be reviewed in the following class. However, I am now setting up classes for the next academic year and wondering if a different kind of deadline would be better. Has anyone thoughts on the subject?

  2. That feeling when your research gets cited but the author isn’t on ResearchGate so your score doesn’t go up.

  3. Fellow teachers who are required to wear a suit to work, is it okay if we wear a sport coat or a blazer (for example, Uniqlo) instead of a suit jacket?

  4. I am starting teaching online to a kid next week. Her mother asked me what would be the best way to pay for her lessons (we live in different cities, no way to exchange cash). I have a Japanese bank account and also use Paypal. Is there any more convenient way, possibly with no fees?

  5. Curious if many people have trouble with BOEs breaking labor laws? I would doubt it is that often since they are the government but still. Just curious cause I approached my supervisor about the amount of PTO since its is lower than 10. I’m sure they have some legit reason but got me thinking about actual BOEs and labor laws. Most of what I see online are to do with companies.

  6. This might be a shot in the dark. Anybody here ever applied for and accepted a distance learning PhD? What was the process like?

  7. It’s a special kind of tired I get correcting tons of papers from kids. My brain just stops working in a weird way towards the end. It just slows down but some things keep on going. Like I will read an entire paper, even put some red marks down but not consciously register any of it and have to go back and force my attention.

  8. Is there a top 5/10 list of companies to teach at in Japan anywhere? I was going off blogs but they were suggesting places like Travelbud, Gaba, etc and I heard they aren’t good places

  9. How do special licensed differ from many of the kens I have seen higher foreigners with ALT experience as full-time native teachers with all the benefits such as pension and lifetime work?

  10. Japanese learners (maybe more just notice it a lot here) seem to have a hard time embedding the question category.

Instead of “What fruit do you like?” they instead prefer “What do you like? fruit. Chunking the question and putting the category at the end I guess.

  11. People on this subreddit are always talking about getting MA and what not, but is that really necessary to find a good job here? I just want to be a long term ALT and I already have a masters degree (in social work), so do I really need to get another masters degree?
