Does “bat” mean a type of flying mammal, or does it mean a tool used for playing sports?
There is no default meaning for homophones. While one meaning may be more common, it all still depends on context. So if it was just 「ああ」by itself, I’d assume that person was just making the noise “aah”. But if it was in a phrase like 「ああいうやつ」, it would be pretty clear that it means “that kind of”.
