PR as a parent of Japanese citizen

Hello! I just moved back to Japan on a work visa but previously lived in Japan for 12 years. I am also the mother of a Japanese citizen (elementary student). Would it be worth it to apply for Permanent Residency or do I need to live here another 10 years?

  1. If what you wrote is the sum of it, you’ve probably got a 10 year wait.

However, is your child’s father not in the picture anymore?

  2. AFAIK there is no special conditions for parent of Japanese with PR. But you might be eligible for long term status.

  3. You might be eligible for the ‘Long-term resident’ visa.

Not only would that limit you to the kind of work you can do (as it’s a table 2 visa) it also makes your eligible for PR after 5 years of consecutive residency (of course you still need a 3/5 year visa to apply and meet the PR requirements to be granted PR)
