Can I make a living off being an ESL teacher in Japan?

I currently live in Canada and want to earn a TEFL certificate after university to go teach English in Japan. However, I want to stay in Japan and live there probably forever (I’m Japanese but was raised here). Is being an ESL teacher a stable job and can I do it until I retire or is it more of a short term job in Japan?

  1. English teaching jobs can pay a living wage, though there is virtually no room for growth and doing ALT work as a 40 year old will be well below average/median income. To live comfortably on let’s say 250,000 a month, you probably have to live in a pretty rural area or a very small place in the city. If you get married and want to raise a family, your partner will most likely also need to at least do part time work.
