Closing UFJ account – English support

Hi everybody! I lived in Japan for a few years but left 4 years ago. The plan was to return frequently so I left my UFJ account open. Then the pandemic happened and after 4 years I’m finally visiting again! So, time to close my account and hope that the process won’t be too painful.

I’ll be in Tokyo next week but don’t speak sufficient Japanese and can’t find an English phone number for UFJ. Does anybody know [1] which UFJ branch I should go to, to get English support and [2] what I should prepare to close my account smoothly?

Any help much appreciated :).

  1. I’d try to call in advance.

At SMBC, they have these magic tablets that connect you to an interpreter.

I would imagine UFJ may very well subscribe to the very same 3p service.

  2. But why though? What do you gain from closing the account, the cost of which is the misery of bureaucracy and interacting with bank staff.

  3. I think your bank accounts already doesn’t exist. If you had money there you might be able to receive it. If not – just don’t bother to lose your time for this.

  4. UFJ has zero English support. After 4 years your account is probably gone already. Right now due to corona you have to apply online to a specific branch you want to visit. You can also walk in but you’ll be given the least priority for service and have to wait until someone cancels or there’s a spot open ahead of schedule.

unless someone at that branch happens to speak English as a hobby, don’t expect translation either.
