Looking for a quiet Tokyo neighborhood.

Good evening!

For the past three nights I’ve been staying in Shinjuku, which was recommended to me by my mid-20s colleague.

I’m 45. I’m overwhelmed by the neon lights, noise, hordes of people and touts.

I’m looking for recommendations for a quiet neighborhood with more of the 30+ crowd, upscale cocktail bars, coffee shops, parks and restaurants. Preferably near a metro station. I saw a YouTube video about Nakameguro, which seems like it’s more my speed. And I enjoyed my walk in the neighborhood(s) between Chiyoda City and Shinjuku.

My nightly budget is ~Y25,000. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might stay in Tokyo?

Thank you for any suggestions.

  1. Azabu, Kagurazaka, even Ginza might suit well. Ginza probably has the most hotel options. Hibiya Blossom might be a good pick too. Easy walk to park-like areas. Quiet outside of the immediate Shinbashi area. Great area for walks and well connected train-wise.

  2. Shiodome, it’s a business district next to Ginza and Shimbashi. It’s far enough away where you don’t get much of that noise, but close enough to everything is in walking distance. Nights and weekends are pretty dead in terms of foot traffic. Lots of good transit connections as well.

  3. Four days ago, i was near Iriya subway station. Really nice neighborhood with a few cheap, very clean and comfy hotels. Cheap like,i paid 25,000 for 3 nights..

  4. The hyatt centric in Ginza was perfectly located walking to the metro, Bar Lupin and many other eating and drinking places. Tonight it is 90,000¥ but there are other hotels nearby.

  5. Anywhere on the outskirts is good, like funabashi

You might want to consider kamigawa and yokoharavas well

  6. You might also try a visit to shirokanedai. The institute of natural study park (shizen kyoiku en) is gorgeous and peaceful. Well over a couple hours can be spent here in nature.

  7. I used to live in Tomigaya Terrace which was so nice and quiet but close to loads of great stuff. I think Omotesando is great. Aoyama. Akasaka. Ebisu. Nakameguro is indeed nice. I always recommend sticking to places near the Yamanote line (or max 2 stops away from it) for ease of getting around.

  8. Akasaka is cool because it is central and never too rowdy, without being dead quiet. Loved the service and rates at Super Hotel Premier over there (26k for 4 nights). Love Koenji and Shimokitazawa to but they are a bit out of the way.

  9. Staying in shiodome right now, it’s nice and quiet and peaceful. But I think you’re going to have a hard time with your price range. You should probably look a little further outside of the heart of the city.

  10. I’d recommend Ebisu.
It’s just right amount of nightlife, it’s reasonably grown-up unlike Nakameguro, and it’s silent by most part.

  11. Assuming you need a hotel, look around Tokyo Tower; there’s some nice upscale hotels. I’d also look around the Imperial Palace.

Hotels in Tokyo don’t tend to be in super quiet places. Just keep that in mind.

Also, I assume you’re on the Kabukicho side of Shinjuku? The side with the Hyatt (west) is much quieter and has mostly hotels.

However that price is a little low. You might want to look at hotels in Kawaguchi just across the River or in Yokohama.

  12. I stayed in Ueno, I loved it there because it still had popular places to check out close by but there were quiet sections. I stayed at the villa Fontaine. Albeit the bed was really hard there so be warned lol
Edit: no full on station close by but really close to a drop off point

  13. >quiet neighborhood with more of the 30+ crowd, upscale cocktail bars

Wrong country. Working age men in Japan cut loose after work, go to loud bars.

I mean, you can find quiet, but not with your other requests.

  14. I stayed last week over at the Royal Park Iconic Hotel near Shiadome. Amazing hotel, quiet area and a 10 minute walk to the Ginza area. It’s a 2 minute walk to the Subway, I believe Shimbashi

  15. Have you been to Jiyugaoka? It’s my favorite neighborhood in Tokyo. Quiet, has a green space/park running across its length, and lots of restaurants.

  16. My husband and I really enjoyed Yanaka. It pretty much is a residential area also called “Cat town”.

  17. I stayed in Gotanda my first week in Tokyo. Close enough to both Gotanda station and Shinigawa station but still a quiet area outside of the morning and evening rush to and from work.

  18. I would recommend The Prince Park Tower. It is adjacent to Zojoji Temple and Shiba Park and looks as if it is built in the park. Both Shiba Koen station and Akabanebashi station on the Oedo line are about 250m away. It is a bit far from Higashi-azabu (500m) and Azabu-juban (1km) on foot, but it is quieter because of that. Roppongi and Hiroo are a short subway or cab ride away. The view from the hotel bar is very nice, and there is a Lawson on the first floor, which is also convenient.

  19. West Toshima(around Senkawa station) was very nice and quiet, at least when I was there nearly 3 years ago

  20. Has the same experience a few years ago, and did my second part of my trip at the CITAN hotel right by Bakurocho station. It’s a hostel, but you can get really nice king bed private rooms for ~$100 a night. They call them “superior king rooms” and it was great. Just as nice as a hotel, huge wrap around windows to watch the neighborhood…just shared bathrooms, which were always really clean and nice. Actually one of my favorite memories was waking up early in that room on a weekday, and watching the neighborhoods morning routine, having a coffee and doing some journaling. Way different than my experience in Shinjuku and the party scene.

Anyway the hotel/hostel is in a quiet neighborhood but with a good selection of restaurants and bar… specifically the lobby is a great coffee shop and the basement was a cocktail bar making it easy as a jump point, a place to socialize, or a place to retreat to when needed. easy access to JR and other transportation, and a better place to be to feel like your experiencing Tokyo, not just shinjuku. Anyway, my recommendation to check out!
