Learning the language

So I’m going to Japan (Tokyo area) this summer for a study abroad program and I’ve started putting in some real effort into learning Japanese, but I’m absolutely terrible. I’m going to continue studying, of course, but I know I’ll be no where near fluent or passing by the time I’m there. Regardless, I’d like to use the opportunity while I’m there to try and improve. (My classes I’m taking are taught in English, so I’m not worried about the education aspect, this is mostly just when I’d be off-campus or in the city.)

I’m just kind of curious how Japan responds to foreigners trying (and likely failing) to communicate in Japanese? Do they appreciate the effort, or insulted, more like “stick to your own language and we’ll deal with you”? Advice is appreciated!

  1. This feels like a r/LearnJapanese question, not here, tbh. And the answer entirely depends on the context of why you’re talking to this person, and what your Japanese ability is, and the person you’re talking to. Japanese people aren’t a monolith.
