How did you escape the “Rat Race” in Japan?

I would define Rat Race as the routine of a boring 8:00-17:00 (in japan often 8 – 20) job.

  1. “Get a better way of making money” seems to be the only answer here. Finding a job that’s not boring is one way of doing that; finding a way of generating income that doesn’t involve a set daily routine is another. I don’t think the solution to the problem is unique to Japan.

  2. Find a job that rates you by the quality of work you do instead of quantity, or just hand in your resignation letter and rely on social safety nets

  3. I think escaping the rat race happens pretty much everywhere. The best mitigation is really working from home, which thankfully since COVID, my company now allows. But I still need to work!

  4. Find a job where you work for a large company in a niche but important department that only has real work 30% of the year but is indispensable to the overall organization.

I do nothing 80% of my days. Literally paid free time.
