Second Interview Advice

Hello!

I am posting on a throwaway account to try to remain anonymous.

I have applied to a university in Japan to be an assistant professor of English. I have passed the first round of interviews and am scheduled to have a second interview with the registrars office/ university admin early next month. Though I am confident in selling myself, I am pretty new into my career and have actually never experienced a *second interview.*

If you have any advice on how to prepare or what to expect for a second interview or an interview for a Japanese university I would be incredibly grateful! TYIA!

  1. It depends on how the hiring process goes. But often the 2nd interview is usually just a formality. You will meet them, they will ask some basic questions but it’s mostly just to see if you are a fit, understand your would-be duties, check on your willingness to relocate if necessary, etc. You will meet someone in the upper admin, make acquaintances and that’s it.

  2. Over 95% chance It’s just a formality. In some cases you might meet a vice-president or even the board and chairman, but the hiring committee/ faculty have already indicated you are their choice and they mostly just rubber stamp it. Provided you don’t leap up on the table and start insulting them you’re fine. Try to give off the vibe you’ll be a friendly agreeable employee and maybe think of how to elevator pitch your research, but don’t expect any hardballs.
