My third Sony bank card no longer works in 6 months.

Me and my girlfriend made Sony bank accounts about 6 months ago.

Her card arrived and worked fine. My card arrived and didn’t work. I contacted support and they said it was a chip malfunction and sent me a new one.

It worked fine. However we tried to use our cards a few weeks ago and neither card works anymore, we cant use it online neither.

We insert it the correct way and we never keep them next to our smartphones. We recieved no emails about our accounts having any issues.

So whats the deal why have three sony bank cards broke in 6 months?

  1. I had one sony bank (debit/atm) card fail after about a year. They sent me a second one in the mail after I made a request, and my new one has had no issues.

When I had my failure before — ATMs would say they couldn’t read the magstripe, so I assume that it was somehow demagnetized. I’ve never had this problem with another card – but I’ve tried to be more protective about the new one – I keep it in a slot in my wallet with no other cards, etc.

However, I believe that the chip and NFC functionality still worked fine in my old card, so if you had a chip problem, it might be something different.

  2. Mine has failed recently. Stopped working at ATMs. I contacted them and they said the stripe in malfunctioning. They’re going to send me a new one.

Edit: got the card back in 2020 maybe. Worked fine until now.

  3. Insert the Sony cash card with the chip facing yourself into the ATM, the opposite way than other cards (it’s also written on the card).

Domestic ATMs read the magnetic stripe (cash card function) while cashless payment terminals and overseas ATMs read the IC chip (visa debit function).
