Wise vs Revolut card

Hi guys! I searched around for a bit and although there have been many posts about debit/credit cards to use in Japan, I have not seen one that applies to my particular case yet, and I was wondering whether anyone could give me some advice on my particular situation! 🙂

I want to get a card like Wise or Revolut to withdraw money from the ATMs here. The plan is to transfer money from my Dutch account to Wise/Revolut, convert it to yens on the app, and then withdraw money. Not planning on withdrawing too much money per month (I think it will be under 250 euros word of yen). However, I have a hard time discerning which of the two would be the best option for me. Delivery costs quite a lot if I want to get the Revolut card, but a lot of people are very positive about it. Again, as for Wise, I do not know anyone who owns that card and I can only enter my Japanese residency if I want the card to be sent to Japan, so I was kinda wondering whether I could still add euros and convert them to yen on the app in such a case, and whether I could still use the Wise card when my residency changes back to NL. Another thing I am keeping in mind is that I will be traveling to Thailand/Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia in the beginning of next year, and I am not sure which of the two will be the better option.

I hope someone here has some ideas/can tell me about their own experiences and help a student out haha! Thanks in advance 🙂

  1. I have both. I suggest you get both if you plan to use them to withdraw money abroad because the cap before they start charging for withdrawals is pretty small.

Your Revolut account is Dutch I believe by reading your post (expensive delivery) You might want to see if you can change it to Japanese or create a new one based in Japan. Otherwise you will be limited to the same monthly cap for free withdrawals from the ATMs here.

  2. Fellow Dutch student in Japan here :). I use Revolut for nearly everything here, and at spots where I can’t pay with Revolut, my back-up is Suica or cash of course. I don’t know how it is for Wise, but exchanging euros to yen is very simple using Revolut. Besides I also use my dutch account here, yes there is an fee for withdrawals, however it is around 0,80 euro every 100 so I take that for granted.

If you have got an Iphone I’d highly suggest getting the cards into apple pay, even for withdrawals I use that sometimes.

Hit me up through messages if you need any (more) help!
