Hello! I’ve booked a trip to Kyoto/Tokyo from May 3 until May 11. Unfortunately, my dates are not flexible.
We are landing in Tokyo on May 3, then planning on traveling to Kyoto via shinkansen that day. We plan on leaving Kyoto and traveling to Tokyo via shinkansen on May 6 (open to May 7 if it makes a big difference). We fly out of Tokyo on May 11.
It looks like shinkansen tickets are available for booking a month or so in advance, so we’re planning on that (hopefully with seat selection).
Any tips? Is May 6 an okay travel day since Golden Week is technically over? Any and all help is appreciated!

The main U-turn rush will be on May 7. Avoid.
May 3 is the first day of the second wave of Golden Week. I am not sure if you will find seats together if you don’t book well in advance.
If you didn’t book in advance, you may have to stand on the Shinkansen especially if you travel during early-late morning and evening until late night.
I would avoid the golden week
