Three weeks in Japan Itinerary

Hi everyone I am going on a trip to Japan in April and I am just wondering if I should get a JR pass or pay as I go here is the Itinerary. I hope this is enough info

Day 1: Fly into Osaka and stay for the day/ night

Day 2: fly to Okinawa and take ferry to Zamami Jima

Day 3-6: Live the beach life and take the ferry to Aka Jima

Day 7: Fly to Kyoto

Day 8-10: Explore Kyoto (maybe day trips elsewhere)

Day 11: train to Kii Tanabe then bus to Takijiri to start the Kumano Kodo sleep in Takahara

Day 12: walk to Nonaka

Day 13 &14: walk to and stay in Yunomine Onsen

Day 15: walk to Koguchi

Day 16: walk to Nachisan

Day 17: bus to Kii-Katsurra then train back to Kyoto

Day 18-23: More Kyoto

Is the JR pass good for the local busses I may use on the Kumano Kodo trail?

Is there a secure place in Kyoto to store our luggage for the duration of the Kumano Kodo hike. My wife will be bringing her laptop so she can work while we are on Zamami Jima, but doesn’t want to lug it for the hike.

Also, if you have suggestions of things to do not in the guide books I’d love to hear them.

  1. JR Pass, for sure not the full pass. As you are staying in JR West territory, I would not get anything more than one of the pass they offer. And I don’t think JR run bus around the Kumano Kodo.

Also it could make more sense to do Kii peninsula when returning from Okinawa. The reason is that Wakayama is much closer to KIX than Kyoto, so you could save time and money spent on the train.

Instead of “leaving luggage in Kyoto” you could use forwarding service and send it from Airport to Kyoto with delivery date set for your arrival. Id you leave your luggage in a coin locker, it’s a daily fee, so a 500 yen locker will cost you 3500 yen if you leave it there for a week.
