What to do for teenagers around Yokohama?

Hi, I (17F) moved here yesterday under a dependent visa and I’m looking for things to do outside in between online school (MWF, 14:00 – 19:00) and reviewing for the ACT + IELTS. I get allowance from my parents and take art commissions now and then so I do have a little spending money but my dad’s very frugal and has strong feelings about any activities that cost too much money, while my mom is easy to convince as long as it’s generally educational or sporty. Not sure how they’d take a DnD meetup because they’re protective, and I don’t know how to play any TTRPGs anyway.

I’m still learning Japanese and the best I can do right now is very basic and I need google translate to get around properly. Is there anything I can do around Yokohama in my free time, maybe once or twice a week? If it helps, I’m in Isogo-ku. Thanks 🙂

(I’m also curious to know if there are any jobs I can take? I’m very willing to work part-time but it’s hard to find information about this online.)

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Tokyo.

  2. Get a bicycle and start exploring! There are so many offbeat places in that area, and it has a great history.

  3. Akarenga redbrick warehouse and walk around. Minatomirai shopping mall, China town, aquarium, ramen museum. There’s a million things to do, your very lucky to end up in Yokohama, it’s an awesome place. If you want to venture more go south to Kamakura, there’s a myriad of temples and lovely scenery there. But just Google “Yokohama sites” and you’ll be good for a while. Your local city hall or local city sports center will have some sort of free volunteer ran japanese classes and various sports classes you can join in as well. Hope you enjoy your time there.

As for part time work it’s possible but you’ll need written permission from your school and you’ll need to apply for permission for doing “other activities” at immigration. This isn’t that hard it just requires some time. This depends on your visa status but I’m assuming you’re not a permanent or long term resident.

  4. Chinatown is fun to wander around in Yokohama, grab some cheap street food. And there is nice park by the water nearby while the sun is still warm – good to take a book and people/ship watch.

  5. Check at your city hall, they may have language classes or social groups for young people. Those are usually fairly cheap.
