Where can we buy baby nappies in Kyoto and sudecrem equivalent?

I went to 2 Matsumoto Kiyoshi stores in Tokyo yesterday and they don’t stock nappies. We are now in Kyoto in a similar situation and hotel staff is quite young so they didn’t have recommendations for us. I read online that you need to take a taxi to stores like toys r u, but they were all quite far away in Tokyo and considering the amazing baby changing facilities are there really no central stores that stock up nappies? We found pull on nappies, which are 1 size too big so ideally would like to buy the right size. Anyone had experience buying nappies in Kyoto/has Japanese friends with babies who can help?

We also need sudocrem, and it looks like it’s not sold in Japan. Perhaps there are local equivalents? I asked in the pharmacy and they didn’t know what this is. Language barrier is also not helping.

  1. Nappies as in diapers? I’m a little shocked that the Matsumoto Kiyoshi locations didn’t have any. I’m not in Kyoto, but ever drug store in Tokyo I’ve been to carries diapers, and plenty of supermarkets as well.

    > sudocrem

Show a drug store clerk “おむつかぶれ” – aka diaper rash.

  2. We usually buy at Create or Akachan Honpo.

Try checking out some other drug stores, or look for a mall with a baby store (nishimatuya, babies r us, Akachan Honpo etc)

    Amazon has as well.

    Diaper in Japanese is Omutsu.

As for sudocrem, you usually would get something like it prescribed. If you’re a resident, you’d get it for free. (Not sudocrem, buy probably something equivalent). Rakuten has sudocrem, so check there.

    Edit: added some info

  3. Look for a Nishimatsuya, AEON, or Akachanhonpo. It might be good to ask a taxi driver, or go to a Kyoto Tourism center. Taxi driver might now locations, Tourism Center will have English speakers.

The big thing is if you’re aren’t staying in a residental area, you might have to go out and search.

  4. You should be able to find diapers at the grocery store chains as well. In Kyoto the common ones would be Life (has a cloverleaf logo), Izumiya, and Fresco. They should pop up if you search for those names on google maps.

  5. Most supermarkets will sell nappies, as well as some department stores, chemists and baby-specific stores such as “Akachan Honpo”.

In Japan, nappies are generally called “omutsu”, or sometimes a transliteration of the American term “diaper”.

Nappy rash is called “omutsu kabure” There are various brands of cream for nappy rash, a well-known one is Restamin cream.
