Go early if you’re departing from kansai airport

just an update of the waiting time in kansai airport

1. Arrival

Currently all inbound passengers will need to WALK all the way to the area where they will check the visit japan QR code for vaccination status – quite fast as they have a lot of counters

however the rate limiting factor is immigration- it’s a long queue if you are arriving in afternoon

2. Departure

\- Extremely degraded service now. Out of 3 Security screening only 1 is functional FOR ALL FLIGHTS

\- go at least 3h in advance if you want to have enough time to shop at duty free. The queue for the security is at least 1-1.5h. The main point is to purchase all the popular japanese snacks duty free before you depart

\- afterwards, you take a train to the gates which is some distance away also

\- only 1 family mart and 1 cafe is opened after security at intl departure. no other restaurants are opened

\- those who went 2h in advance had to be expedited and had to RUSH to their flights. there are scenes of airport staff running around to catch people who are stuck at security. Everyone is running around. My flight was delayed for 30min because we had to wait for people who got stuck at security

  1. Narita wasnt as bottle necked but only McDonalds and a 7-11 was open past 5pm in the intl departures. Not the most inspiring last meal in Japan. 😂

  2. I just came back from my trip. Flew out of Haneda. I had the complete opposite experience. Landed in Haneda at 3pm on Nov 4th. The walk to the immigration check was long, but we were done within 30-40 min including the walk to. We left on 12th, flight was at 5pm. We thought it would be horrendous so we got there around 12pm. Took 10 min and we were on the other side for duty free shopping. Definitely had way too much time on our hands. Most of the restaurants and shops were open until around 4pm then I noticed they began closing up.
