I’m a Filipino and planning to get a Japanese Citizenship

I am 19 years old and my mom married a japanese man. The reason why I wanted a Japanese Citizenship is because I also wanted to get the Japan Passport so I won’t need to apply for visa incase of traveling.

What are the requirements or what is the possible way to get Japanese Citizenship? I don’t know anything about the laws in Japan so I need help in this

  1. I’m pretty sure that Japan does not allow duel citizenship, so you have to be very sure you want to be a Japanese citizen and not *just for traveling*. This is just the beginning of what you need to know.

  2. Article 5 of the [Nationality Law](https://www.moj.go.jp/ENGLISH/information/tnl-01.html) states the conditions.

    1. You must have lived in Japan for 5 or more years consecutively
    2. You must be 18 years old or older
    3. You must not have commited any major crimes
    4. You (or your parents, if they are supporting you financially) must have a good enough income
    5. You must renounce your Philippine citizenship
    6. You must not have any intentions of overthrowing/undermining the Japanese Consitution/Government
    7. You must be able to speak Japanese (around 3rd year elementary school level)

Articles 6 to 9 list some cases where some conditions are relaxed. For example, if you were born in Japan, if you were adopted by a Japanese parent while you were a minor, if you are married to a Japanese national, etc. Check if any apply to you.

Once you fulfill the conditions, either make an appointment with your closest Legal Affairs Bureau (consultations are free), or employ the help of a lawyer specializing in visas/naturalization ($$$).

So, your title says “I’m a Filipino and planning to get a Japanese Citizenship”, but how much exactly have you “planned”? Do you understand what getting Japanese citizenship entails? You’re still young, finish your studies, find out what you really want to do, and spend that time thinking if you really want to stay in Japan long term.
