Moving with 2 suitcases

I’m moving from Kobe to Osaka and I have a month to move everything in from my last apartment. I plan on doing trips with a backpack to move smaller things in. However, I have 2 large suitcases and I’m not sure how I would move those. I’ve looked at luggage moving services, but it seems they are only for “hotel to hotel” or “airport to hotel.” I feel that I don’t have enough to do a “single person moving” with a moving company.

I’m currently considering just spending the money on a taxi since it’s less than an hour car ride. If anyone has any advice, please let me know!

  1. Some taxi companies offer fixed-fee transportation if you call 1-2 weeks in advance. The cheapest I got was ¥6000 for a 45 minutes taxi ride from the airport which was the most convenient option for over 100 kg of luggage. (Rental car can hardly be cheaper even if you only pay for 6 hours, plus you have to return it to the station.)

  2. Funnily enough, today I’m using Yamato to send a large suitcase to my new digs.

I didn’t want to risk inconveniencing people as it’s a big’un and heavy, so that’s why I’ve gone with Yamato.

That hasn’t been my experience with Yamato and Sagawa but I can’t speak to the other services.

I’ve done just about every shipping combination of house/airport/hotel/konbini without any issue for my luggage in the past. The nice thing too about not sending to an airport is you avoid the airport surcharge.

  4. Just send it as a regular package. I’ve gone to Yamato with them and I send them as a large package and tell them when it needs to arrive. No prep at all. Super cheap and I moved a farther distance than you. It’s so easy. You don’t need a luggage service!

  5. I moved to Japan 2 times, one time with 2 huge suitcases, second time with 2 big and 1 small suitcase. I carried them from the Airport to my home through 3 trains. Nobody cared, so I’m guessing it is okay to just take it with you on the train if you dont wanna pay for sending them.

  6. You can send it as a package via Yamato, or any other delivery company.

You could also just take them with you on the train or whatever. I’ve done that multiple times. 2 is definitely more annoying than just 1, but it’s certainly doable. Just aim for non-peak times for your move and it shouldn’t be an issue.

  7. From Kobe to Osaka? That’s so easy just lug that shit on the train. I did multiple big suitcase runs from Nishinomiya to Osaka using the local Hankyu line and it was no problem. You’ll spend barely any money to do it yourself.
