Hello! My wife and I are goingto move to Kansai and I’m trying to judge what a reasonable moving quote is. Some facts about our move:
– Tokyo to Osaka
– From a 35m2 apartment to a 75m2 apartment.
– Current apartment is on the 3rd floor, the new one is on the 4th. Neither have an elevator.
– Large appliances include a 49”TV, 200cm long couch, and a washer. (No fridge.)
– Double size mattress and frame.
Currently getting quotes around ¥160,000 for us to pack ourselves which seems high to me. I had heard that companies here often pack for you.
Someone on this sub made a comment 9 months ago which said they made the move in the opposite direction, 100m2 apartment, and the company packed for them for the same price.
Has anyone made a similar move and what did you pay?
Thanks!

Ask for a lower price. Tell them another moving company is coming over to give you an estimate. In my experience, they will come down off their initial estimate. Moving on weekends is usually more expensive than week days.
160k seems high, I’d say 80-100k is more appropriate. Get multiple quotes, be flexible with the moving date/time, and avoid peak seasons like April/October, get a referral from someone who has recently moved, etc
A few years back I moved from Osaka to Tokyo. Both places had elevators.
No large furniture but about 7 or 8 massive, huge cardboard boxes, + the specialty boxes for coats and what not. It 100% needed a truck.
50k JPY and they packed it. YMMV
You could probably post each big item individually for far less than that and then get a small mover van to help take the rest. Or get a more reasonable price somewhere else.
What is it that you have against elevators?
No elevators and moving over prefectures on that size is quite normal prize. As someone else said try to get quotes from other moving companies but do not expect to go below the 10万 mark. Also Sakai will be more expensive as other and not bulk a lot because from experience they use dedicated vehicles that load and deload once. You could probably check with other companies and get price down if you are flexible on move day and times, are ok with them moving your stuff halfway in another truck that is shared with other movers. A friend did that and saved some money (I think like 4万) to the initial price from Sakai (she went with アート)when moving Tokyo to Nagoya and using packing service.
