I’d like to adopt a dog (a young one even if not a puppy) but I really hate those shops that have dogs in cages cause I read an article about how they only sell puppies and then send the ones that gets old to die, so that they always sell only puppies. I’d really like to avoid giving money to that industry. Money is not a problem so I can pay just I’d like to avoid that kind of business model.
Any help would be appreciated
Edit: I live in Okayama city

This seems like a post about shopping, maybe your question is solved by [the wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/shopping)?

You mean shops like Aeon pet
Kahma 21 and so on?
If so, then you should name your province or city, otherwise would be very difficult to name a place. Also, there is many animal shelter where you can adopt instead of giving money for a industry you don’t like.
There are a number of dog rescues throughout Japan, including Ark Rescue in Kansai which is also run (or partly run?) by foreigners. Just note that you need to prove that your residence allows dogs. And be aware that many japanese rescues have a policy of not giving to single people, old people and foreigners.
Have you looked into adopting one? Yes there are more hurdles for foreigners and if you’re single it’s difficult as well but you may find something useful if you search within the sub.
pet-home(dot)jp has lots of dogs from all over the country. Some are being rehomed by rescues and others are being rehomed by people who can’t keep their animals anymore.
Only the rescues are allowed to charge you any fee for the dog adoption. There are dogs of all ages. We got our now 1 year old Akita from pet-home when he was 5 months old.
You can also try jmty as they also have pets that people need to give away.
as other comments mentioned, there are a lot of adoption/rescues. some of them
can be very strict (no singles, etc), but it’s a chance to give a home to a dog that needs it.
if you’re looking for a certain breed, i’ve found that recently the instagram community has been booming. if you search the tag #(breed)ブリーダー there are tons of results. then you can see the puppies, adult dogs, and have a look at the environment. i’d recommend always visiting first before you make a choice.
I used Peace-wanko Japan (funny name, I know). They have shelters throughout Japan and rehome dogs that have been rescued from slaughter. They are very responsible, take care over who they allow to adopt dogs, and you only pay for the vaccinations/medical care each dog needed while in their care.
Adopt/rescue
You should also be sure to avoid purchasing any supplies from shops that also sell pets.
There is a huge trust issue if you are not buying from a pet shop. Even then they may reject you. We have adopted one dog (who is deaf) from a breeder from whom we had already bought dogs. Reputable breeders will reduce prices on older dogs and will not destroy them. Dogs like ours and retiring breeding dogs may be given to trusted hands for just the medical costs of injections.
Check Craigslist. That is how I adopted my cat.
The transaction went sort of like:
Yo I wanna cat.
Can you keep a cat?
Yup.
Here is the cat.
Cuddliest thing in the universe.
