Does Japanese Poetry look better Top->Bottom, Right->Left, or is Horizontal, Left->Right aesthetically acceptable?

From Wikipedia, I gather that both options are used, but I wanted to ask if, for poetry in particular, one of them is preferred.

  1. Aesthetically I always think top-to-bottom looks better for most writings, but because I’m a native English speaker, left-to-right is much easier for me to read. For formally presenting a work of poetry, though, top-to-bottom is the much safer option.

  2. It’s the first kind. Traditionally, it’s only been the first kind when I read poetry or any kind of writing when I was in school in Japan.
