Using Revolut as a main card in Japan

Hey,

From February onwards I will be moving to Japan for half a year. As a German, I don’t own a credit card, so I would have to get one before I arrive. I cannot get one from my current bank, as the requirements are incredibly high.

As I am working there full time, I will be paid in JPY. I will also receive small monthly payments in euro from Germany.

Now to my question: Would getting revolut be a good choice for my situation? Or is there any other carrier that would help me here?

Thanks in advance

  1. You can use it for shopping (in person and online) but not for a mobile phone contract or certain utility bills. It’s also unreliable in terms of withdrawing cash- is had to know which ATMs will work.

  2. Yeah, what u/krung_the_almighty said basically. I looked it up as well and ended up just opening a PayPay bank account. They have an easy to get debit card that doubles as cash card.

  3. Recolut is good for having easy access to foreign funds and great exchange rates, but it won’t replace the Japanese banking system unfortunately.
