This is precisely what the Japanese govt and Keidanren want to avoid which is why they teach an intentionally dysfunctional English syllabus.
As a recruiter with 12 years’ experience recruiting in Japan, I can confirm this article.
Japanese have no idea how low their salaries are in comparison to identical roles in Europe Australia and in the States.
And this isn’t just service level jobs, this is even IT and Tech companies as well.
This is just another step for Japan moving constantly backwards into the past.
Why would someone in IT from Silicon Valley move to Japan to work in Tech for less than half the salary?
Japan is so so so sooooooooo. far behind due to companies not paying even half of what others are earning overseas to the point that if you go to a Japanese website in 2022, the page looks like it was made in the 90’s.
Yet Japan still maintains the longest working hours with 1/3 the productivity ratings to that of Europe and the US.
Seriously. Try it! Just go to a Japanese website and you’ll see it plain as day.
So we have everyone working crazy long hours with little to no productivity earning half the salary of their counterparts overseas, and the LDP just announced that they are planning on raising sales tax to 15% today.
Japan is going to disappear…
There is no future in this country, period.
As long as you don’t expect anything better in America, by all means. I’ve never been happier or more hopeful about my future as I am living in Kansai.
Wow, as an American I didn’t know we had it made. Well, except for healthcare access and affordability that is.
Hahaha, not really happening since the level of English in Japan is deplorable! The percentage of students studying abroad are at an all-time low for two reasons: lack of interest going abroad and English comprehension. Japan’s superiority complex is killing their competitiveness globally.
Japanese leaders: what if we do nothing and something magical just happens?
I might be earning a lot less than my counterparts in America but at least I can afford a home, pay my bills, raise multiple children, eat whatever I want, engage in multiple hobbies and still put money away for savings and investments ¯_(ツ)_/¯
These types of articles love to go on and on about how Japanese make less than Anericans but they never seem to factor in cost of living. I could talk all day about how workers in San Francisco make so much more money than I do but it doesn’t matter how much more money they’re making if they can’t afford my lifestyle in their own city. This is simple propaganda.
For people considering moving here, pick Kansai, not Kanto.
Surprised any Japanese would want to live in America, given how much it gets badmouthed on Japanese television as being a “dangerous” country and all…
As a foreigner working in Japan in data analytics area. Japan salary is really low compared to US. If you factor in the tax, Japan tax rate is very punishing for salary above 12m yen. Japan is a great country to tour or live but a terrible country to develop your career
