Study abroad homestay vs apartment

Hi there,

Going to be studying abroad for my Fall and Spring semester in Saitama. I am wondering if it would be better to start off with a homestay versus getting an apartment since my university said that dorms are competitive to get into and they recommend homestay or a furnished apartment.

My current plan is try homestay for the first semester then maybe move into an apartment for the 2nd although I am wondering if short term homestay options exist since I would not want to be locked into a homestay if it doesn’t work out since I have seen that it’s kinda hit or miss depending on who you get sometimes it can be great and sometimes not.

Anyone have experience on a homestay versus a furnished apartment? Since my university offers both and I am thinking if it might be fine to do a homestay while waiting for a furnished apartment to become available or if it would be better to do a homestay for a full semester. I have around N5 in terms of language level so far which I am hoping to improve.

Thanks!

  1. Try to get a dorm / furnished apt. I did whatever I wanted when I wanted. A guy I knew who was in a home stay was more or less guilted in doing stuff with the family he stayed with and was more of less at their mercy a lot. (I.E. check in with them if he was staying out, etc.)
