silly question about placement testing in language school

I’m planning to go to ISI. Of course I messaged the school rep and asked too, but I’m curious about you guys’ opinions on this. I finished genki 1 and 2 plus MNN 1 and 2. I go to language school in April. I want to place as high as possible and skip as many levels as I can. If I finish An N3 level book by then (Either tobira or Quartet 1), do you think I’d be able to start language school at beginning N2 level classes? If I’m not mistaken, that would be skipping the first 3 terms of language school (for the ones that do the 8 terms in 2 years).

  1. I can’t speak for ISI specifically but at Arc Academy they had us take a test on the first day and placed us based on that. I imagine it’ll be similar.
Also, be warned N3/N2 tend to take longer than N5/N4…the so-called “intermediate plateau”

  2. If it hasn’t changed you’ll get a 1-2 page test checking vocab, grammar, reading and handwriting including recalling kanji from memory. The school will assess you better than random strangers on the internet.
