Company wants me to come in every day before my shift and do some work. They specified I would not be paid and it’s not in my contract. Is this legal? I am an hourly IT worker.
Politely decline and say that since it’s not in your contract and not paid work, you will instead come in at your regularly scheduled time.
What are your plans with this company? Just milk them for the hourly or do you have plans to become a regular employee there? This is what is really going on. They want to see if you’re cut out to be a regular or just another temp they can start the replacement process.
That’s a pretty standard practice in Japan. It’s illegal but there’s virtually no enforcement because you have to prove your case. That usually requires getting documentation that shows you’ve been forced to work unpaid overtime and corroboration from coworkers that forced unpaid overtime is a company practice.
