Is there an equivalent to “Nextdoor” here in Japan?

Looking to learn a little more about my neighborhood.

  1. Learn a bit more? Nextdoor is nothing but petty bitching and often some not-so-subtle racism.

Look for Facebook groups for your city.

  2. If you live in Tokyo, start with the Tokyo Jisou Maps app, which shows cartographic and photographic overlays for most of Tokyo (with more coverage for the central parts). It’ll show you what used to be where you are.

If you’re interested in what’s there now (events and the like), Facebook groups will help a bit, but I’ve learned most of what I know of my neighborhood just by walking around and chatting with people. The elderly are a particularly good source; many of them, I find, have time to talk and are happy to.

Check your local city hall for volunteer groups, too. They’ve got a lot of information, and you’ll meet a lot of people who care about and know about the neighborhood if you do volunteer work yourself.

  3. If by Nextdoor you mean residents warning others about “undesirables” (i.e., minorities minding their own business) supposedly committing burglaries and affecting their property values then no, there’s no equivalent.

Machi BBS has threads per neighborhood. Activity level depends on town.
