I’m graduating soon at an Asian university (not home country) with an ms degree in engineering and I am considering applying for the MEXT program for a doctoral course. As far as I know a part of the program is language and culture study. Is that mandatory? I went to Japan previously as an exchange student where I spent time getting to know the language and culture so I’d like to just do research and complete the program sooner. Anyone who went a similar path successfully?

It really depend on your Ph.D. advisor and the university curriculum. My Ph.D. advisor recommend anyone who doesn’t have conversation-level Japanese to take a 6-month intensive course, for example. Some require you to do research right away.
I don’t think any Ph.D. curriculum has requirement for culture study, but I do know some MS curriculums have them.
