For public school Tokyo JETs: Where do you live before finding an apartment?

I’ve heard private school JETs live in a hotel till they find a place. Would public school JETs live in a shared house or something? And what is the cost like?

  1. I was provided housing from day 1. All the teachers I work with live in an apartment block owned by the school, I have a small 1 room studio. It costs about 5000 yen a month. Old and moldy but convenient. Your situation might be different as housing is not always provided.

  2. About a month before moving to Japan I was contacted by a company called Relocation Japan that works with JET. They connect you to a real estate agent who asks for your preferences and comes back with a list of suggestions that you sift through. You could find things yourself and show your real estate agent but it seems like they have a better search engine system with their company.

After saying your preference they speak with the landlord or whether or not it’s available as well as foreign friendly. If confirmed they send it off and get the rest set up for you.

Shared houses are possible I believe but I think you would not be with Relocation Japan to do that, I would ask both Relo Japan and your real estate agent. Relocation Japan acts as a guarantor so that landlords will even let you rent.

Dependent on your location in Tokyo (it’s a big place) your price can vary, my one friend lives near Ikebukuro and for her 1K she pays around 81000 which I think is a great price. I live in Ota near my school at a relatively new apartment but I pay a pretty bad price of 91k for my 1K. Utilities are usually not included and I would say I pay about 9-11k a month.

  3. I was a 2015 arrival JET. Public JETs had one week in a hotel and one week with a host family.

As for JETs that were coming in last year, they spent 2 weeks in quarantine hotels, and then they were expected to move into their new place.

If you don’t find a place in the allotted time that JET gives you, you could stay at an Airbnb, hotel, or crash at another JET’s place (Tatami Time Share).
