Anki to supplement RTK

When using Anki to supplement RTK should I have the kanji or the meaning on the front of the card?

  1. Depends on what you are trying to learn. If you want to do classic RTK as described in the book(s), then you have to put the keyword on the front and test yourself on producing the kanji. If you want to only train recognition, then it can be enough to put the kanji on the front and test if you can remember the keyword (also referred to as RRTK). By my experience RTK gives you a somewhat better retention but takes a lot longer. If you are not interested in learning to write kanji, RRTK should be sufficient IMO.
