I’m German and all German websites offer just one description for Japanese rice, which is short grain rice. The same when I visit stores, all I find in the form of Japanese rice is short grain rice as description.
Which is weird because when I look up what sorts of basmati rice exist I find two different kinds of basmati rice. That confuses me as I doubt that there is just one kind of rice in the entirety of Japan. Shouldn’t there be regional different sorts of rice?
I’m sorry if this kind of question isn’t allowed on this sub. But I don’t know where else to ask.

There are various types of Japanese rice, but I believe all of them are shortgrain. Koshihikari seems to be the most common one in my experience. There is also Japanese glutinous rice, which is almost exclusively used for mochi.
This page introduces some of the different variaties of rice.
