will moving in with a friend change our tax status?

hello,

I am looking to move in with my friend, but she is worried if I register her address then it will change her tax status. does city hall see that 2 people would now be living in the same apartment?

also, does city hall ever communicate with the landlord? she technically cannot have another person living with her, but it’s only going to be 2 months so maybe it’s not an issue.

please let me know what you think/any advice. thank you.

    No.

No. This is the second thread in so many days to ask this. Is it common in other countries? It sounds crazy to me.

  2. You and your friend can live at the same address and still are considered separated households for tax purpose if you’re financially independent from each other. This is a relatively common situation. When I first came to Japan, I and half a dozen other guys all lived in the same company house.

Of course if you register with city hall they’ll see that, the question is does City Hall care. They do not.

I suspect though that perhaps she is not as enamored of the idea of you two living together as you might be and perhaps this is an excuse to try to save your feelings. You might, perhaps, consider “reading the air” so to speak.

No, how would city hall know the lease arrangements? All they care about is the property tax and your residence taxes.
