Magic shops in Tokyo?

Any suggestions for magic shops that carry decent quality tricks?

I have a child who has been really into magic for about a year. He’s read several Japanese books on magic, a lot of sleight of hand stuff and mostly tricks you can do with home items like rubber bands or rings. He really wants a sword swallowing trick (yikes!) for Christmas, but I am guessing other decent tricks would make him happy too.

Isn’t sword swallowing exactly what it looks like? There’s no trick. It’s a dull sword that you shove down your esophagus.

  2. When I was into magic I personally never found a great shop in Japan so I resorted to just buying online from places like Penguin Magic and other American or British sources. I’d also watched Wizard Magic Review on YouTube. They reviewed the latest in consumer magic and if a trick particularly stood out and they gave it an endorsement I’d track it down.

The available tricks online will far outweigh what you’d find at a small brick and mortar shop. The only downside is you don’t actually get hands on with anything before it arrives and more than a few times a trick that looked great online would be completely impractical in real life situations or just too difficult to do for a butter fingers like me.

If your kid knows English, perhaps show him the YouTube show and ask him if any of the tricks look good to him, and then order it online.
