Has anyone here who is learning Japanese tried playing Pokemon Red in Japanese and if so how many words and how much grammar did you know when you played it?
I think I was through genki 1 when I started, dropped it in favor of black so I could practice kanji.
I felt like I didn’t know anything but by the time I beat it could easily read 60-70% of the vocabulary and it had forced me to learn tons of grammar to understand the story.
Maybe could have gotten more out of it had I properly tackled kanji and learned a bit more grammar first but it was a good experience and forced me to learn a lot of vocab I carried over to later games. Overall the games are fairly easy language wise so it wasn’t an insurmountable grind or anything.
I did end up learning a lot of words that I didn’t see again for a very long time so if I had to go back I would have paired it with some kind of frequency list.
