Hi all,
I’m a graduate student – and Japanese speaker – attending the University of Hawaiʻi conducting research in the areas of linguistics & second languages, and got mod approval to post this very short survey about how people (namely, second-language learners/speakers, so a lot of members of this subreddit!) use pronouns while speaking & using Japanese.
If you could fill it out, it’d be super appreciated. Feel free to post any questions here. Thank you so much / mahalo / ありがとう!

The final question is worded weirdly:
_”Do you have thoughts on the differences between Japanese (with first-person pronouns, used by you about yourself) and English (with third-person pronouns, used by others about you)?”_
The way it’s phrased, it sounds like you’re asking people to talk about the differences between Japanese and English in general, or like you’re implying that Japanese only has first person pronouns, while English has only third person pronouns.
I’m guessing that you want to talk about social connotations of each category of pronouns. If that’s true, maybe reword it like this?
_Do you have thoughts on the differences between first-person pronouns in Japanese, and third-person pronouns in English? First-person pronouns are used by you about yourself (watashi, boku, etc) and third-person pronouns are used by others about you (he, she, they, etc.)_
I think for most people here japanese would be the third language not second 😉
