Intra-company transferee visa for employee of a non-profit organization

Hello!

I currently work for a non-profit organization which has presence in my home country as well as Japan.

Due to circumstances, I will move to Japan on a non-work visa, but would still want to continue with my work. My office in home country allows me to work remotely, however, since I am on a non-work visa, it would be illegal for me to continue working for the office in my home country.

I can try to convince my boss to have me on intra-company transferee visa to the Japan office but can’t seem to figure out if this is at all possible since I work for a non-profit organization.

Anybody has experience on a similar scenario?

Any advice how I can move forward with this?

Thanks in advance!

Depends on the non-work status of residence. If you’re here on a tourist or cultural visa… Then yeah, no work. But if here as a student or dependent, you can still work (albeit part time hours). If you’re here as a spouse of a national or a descendant, then there are no restrictions on work at all.

Your boss would need to be discussing this with the Japan branch. They’d be the ones doing the leg work for you and should know if they’re able to sponsor visas. I suppose it really depends on how they’re registered in Japan, but I can’t imagine it being an issue.

  2. Have someone in the company office here call immigration and ask.

Do you otherwise qualify for a work visa?

I originally transferred here as an intracompany transferee (software company), the normal requirement of degree, or the 10 years of experience apply.

Also, unless this has changed, the intracompany transferee visa is a little strict, it ties you to one company. You’d need to change status if you wanted to move to a different company.
